The Missing, final episode, review a manipulation too far When The Missing BBC One got off to a dramatic, emotionally overwhelming start eight weeks ago with the disappearance of little Olly Hughes while on holiday in France, it felt like it would be an outstanding drama. We had to put it on hold as the action swung back to Tony, his ex wife Emily Frances OConnor and French detective Julien Baptiste Tcheky Karyo as they confronted Deloix, now mortally ill in hospital. Then, to compound the insult, things got nasty when we were asked to believe that the Romanian had found the boy alive and well which is how he came to appear on that video from across the road but had then killed him anyway. Emily got a happy ever after of sorts, moving on with her life and marrying her liaison officer fianc. Which might have been comforting, if we had been able to forget that opening scene, and the hope to which Tony, despite all evidence and advice to the contrary, still clung so fiercely. In the closing moments we returned to Russia and found it was Tony in the playground all along, madly accosting a young boy believing him to be Olly. It was a scene that induced a sickening feeling, not only on poor, sad Tonys behalf but because, like so much in this episode, it felt like a manipulation too far. And meant that, in the end an otherwise excellent series failed to deliver the one thing this viewer wanted most from the ending a heartfelt, convincing sense of closure.
