The Missing, final episode, review a manipulation too far When The Missing BBC One got off to a dramatic, emotionally overwhelming start eight weeks ago with the disappearance of little Olly Hughes while on holiday in France, it felt like it would be an outstanding drama. So it proved in the main the twists and promises of its complex plot, and terrific performances, kept me gripped right up to the climax of last weeks episode, when a sobriety medal and John Cales Heartbreak Hotel over the closing credits seemed to point the finger of guilt at Alain Deloix, proprietor of the hotel the family had stayed in. This despite getting off to a cracking start with a disconcerting opening scene of the kind that, in earlier episodes, had proved so effective. Watch Sinbad And The Minotaur Online Facebook more. We were in a snow covered Russian playground. A man was accosting schoolboys. Suddenly, the big eared, matchstick drawing associated with Olly appeared on a fogged up car window. No, surely not After all this time, the boy couldnt still be alive Exactly as wed watched it surge in Ollys father Tony James Nesbitt time and again through the series whenever a new shred of evidence came to light. A complete negation of the abduction story wed followed for weeks. Then, to compound the insult, things got nasty when we were asked to believe that the Romanian had found the boy alive and well which is how he came to appear on that video from across the road but had then killed him anyway. With 3. 0 minutes to go, the finales chief concern became tying up plot strands that might otherwise have been left lying loose. Suicide dispensed with both the mayor and the paedophile Vincent Bourg Titus de Voogdt. Tony got to be noble by not telling Deloixs wife Astrid Whettnall what a monster her husband was. Emily got a happy ever after of sorts, moving on with her life and marrying her liaison officer fianc. Which might have been comforting, if we had been able to forget that opening scene, and the hope to which Tony, despite all evidence and advice to the contrary, still clung so fiercely. In the closing moments we returned to Russia and found it was Tony in the playground all along, madly accosting a young boy believing him to be Olly. It was a scene that induced a sickening feeling, not only on poor, sad Tonys behalf but because, like so much in this episode, it felt like a manipulation too far. And meant that, in the end an otherwise excellent series failed to deliver the one thing this viewer wanted most from the ending a heartfelt, convincing sense of closure.
