In the meantime, Dexter becomes a host of his own TV show where he enjoys a lot of success. His mother, who has been diagnosed with cancer, is not impressed by his new found celebrity status.
As the personal lives of Emma and Dexter play out over the years, they both have unresolved issues they need to face in order to be happy and fulfilled. The story spans several years during which time the two end up meeting each other again and again. On some occasions they are each involved with other people even though they obviously have chemistry with each other. Dexter will talk to Emma about events in his life and his personal feelings, which he does not share with anyone else. Ultimately, the two meet one last time and admit their true feelings for each other.
At this time, Emma has accomplished her dream of becoming a published author and the two decide to get married. Dexter pursues his lifelong dream of owning a cafe, which becomes very successful as well.
The happy couple enjoy their life together and decide to start a family. Just when it seems they have finally attained everything they wanted, the story takes an unexpected turn at the very end.
